Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4 in 1972. Being a single girl, she was raised also by her maternal grandmother. Scott attended an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then Temple University after graduating. In Temple, Scott held two jobs as she was studying secondary education. She hoped to become an high school English teacher. However, she was not able to achieve her dream, however, when after studying for three years while working as a teacher assistant in college, she decided to leave. She started her career as a spoken-word artist, performing her own work at live poetry readings and eventually linked up together with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. Then, during Roots' performance she came out as an artist. The show led to collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She was able to perform through the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. She was contracted by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
